What exactly is a Netflix code?
It's the internal ID number Netflix gives each genre page. Behind the scenes the catalogue is sliced into very specific groups, such as “Deep sea horror movies” or “Quirky romance”, and every group lives at its own URL. The number at the end of that URL is the code.
How do I use one?
On a computer, sign in to Netflix and go to netflix.com/browse/genre/ followed by the number, for example netflix.com/browse/genre/8711 for horror. Or just press the arrow next to any genre on this page and it opens for you. On phones, opening the link in a mobile browser works best.
Are these codes official? Do they still work?
They're Netflix's own category IDs, so yes, they're real. Netflix does occasionally retire or merge categories, though, and what's inside each one depends on your country. If a code opens an empty page, that shelf just isn't available where you are right now.
Do I need a VPN or anything special?
No. The codes simply point to pages that already exist in your normal account. They don't unlock content from other regions and don't change your subscription.
Why can't I find these categories on the home screen?
The home screen is personalised and only surfaces broad rows. The deeper genre pages are still there. Netflix just doesn't link to most of them, which is why a list like this is handy.
